Dear Sandy,

I was looking for the Ship USS Salt Lake on the web and I came upon your website! Because all I have of my fathers days in the navy are his discharge paper and a newspaper article with his picture in uniform and them saying he was coming home.

I was shocked when I found your website and his "A" Division picture! I only got the newspaper article on him a year ago when I started to do some family research.

My father died May 5, 1981, he would be 76 years old now. I didn`t know his duties while on the USS Salt Lake, unfortunately I didn`t know my father after I was nine years old. So you can see why I was so excited!

His time spent on the USS Salt Lake was 5-20-43 to 10-25-45. I`m hoping someone will remember him and what his duties were.

While stationed in a submarine in foreign waters my father had an appendicitis attack. He had the necessary surgery while submerged in ocean waters.

You have done a wonderful thing creating this website and keeping the memorys alive for them and for the ones who loved them so much!

Thank you!

Cecelia M. Mussmann Barrett

Through the navy's efficient allotment plan, they voluntarily set aside a certain amount of the service pay for regular purchase of bonds.

Served in Okinawa

Bernard J. Mussmann, MM3c, was aboard the USS Salt Lake City when she hurled more than 150,000 tons of projectiles at enemy planes, ships, and land emplacements off Okinawa.

Veteran of major invasions from Guadalcanal to Okinawa, the SLC's five and eight-inch guns pounded the island by day and remained on the alert to repel Jap suicide attacks by night.

Mussmann entered the service in May, 1943 and was employed by the Climax Engineering Co. before his entry into the service.
