USS SLC Model
Hand Carved by USS SLC Veteran
William M. Patrick, Ch. Gun
1929-1943

FLAGBAR 501x15

Information from Son, Bill Patrick

The model was carved sometime in the 1930s, Dad was quite the whittler. I have two model boats that he carved in the 1920; one of the Mayflower and another of a schooner. The SLC model was given to my son who lives in Oregon and is displayed in his house in a protective case.

Most of the rigging has thread that has been unwound into the individual strands & goes through little blocks. I think the wood is pine and has a veneer deck to simulate teak.

The model was damaged when he shipped it home when he was reassigned to the USS Intrepid in 1943. I still remember playing with the busted up ship in the late 1940's. He put it back together in the '70's when he went to a reunion in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Everything is hand carved: the cranes that lifted the planes into the water are carved out of one piece of wood. He was the type of carver that could carve a chain with a basket on the end that holds to balls, out of a single piece of 2x2x12 inch wood, I have it displayed with the Mayflower.
