Dear Sandy,

The above picture was taken a couple of months before boarding the SLC in April, 1944 at Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, CA.

I enlisted in the Marines on Dec. 3rd, 1943, my 17th birthday, at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, CA., which is now owed by the Japanese.

I left the ship in late Oct. of 1945 and proceeded back to Mare Island by train. I was discharged at Mare Island on Nov. 16, 1945 at the age of 18.
