Clarence Frederick Tyler, S1c, USN, #360 25 97, while manning the powder hoist in No. 3 Turret, was caught in hoist mechanism. Diagnosis: Injuries, multiple, extreme #2542, KL "H", man pronounced dead at 1400 by Commander James F. Hays, (MC), USN.

Assembled all hands aft to bury the late Clarence F. Tyler, S1c, USN; Committed body to the sea. W. J. Kuhn, Lt. (jg) (Chc), USN officiating.

The Navy buries its dead. Taps have just been sounded and now the pallbearers tip a dead sailor's body over the gangway. At this penultimate moment of burial, the hero lies stitched in canvas, weights at this feet, shrouded in the Flag he served. But note that Chief Petty Officer and sailor grasp flag over dead man's head. The Stars & Stripes will not follow him into the water.
