Sandy

I was born in Marion Co., IL. on Aug. 31st, 1926. At the age of 15, I left home and joined the Marines. After serving about 7 months, it was discovered that I was underage. I was then discharged and placed in the inactive reserve.

In Sept. of 1943, I was inducted into the Navy. I went to Boot Camp in Farragut, Idaho. From there I went to Hunter's Point San Francisco, CA. and then to the US Naval receiving barracks at Shoemaker, CA.

I boarded the USS Salt Lake City sometime in late 1943 or early 1944. I attained the rank of Seaman First Class and was assigned to the forward 5 inch battery, 5th Division.

I was discharged at St. Louis, MO. on March 25th, 1946. I married Mable Poggemoeller on July 4th, 1948. We have one daughter, Charlotte, born in 1949.

In 1988 I retired from Ford Motor Company and now my wife and I divide our time between our home in Michigan and our farm in Centralia, IL.
