USS SLC...Enlisted Navy...Karl M. Sundberg, S2c

US FLAG Karl M. "Big Swede" Sundberg passed away on Sept. 16th, 2004
Dec. 6th, 2002

Karl joined the US Navy in 1942 at the age of 22 in Grygla, MN. He boarded the USS SLC on February 21st, 1943 and served on her until Nov. 19th, 1945.

He remembers things like "Batting the Breeze" and an occasional drink of "Raisin Jack".

He received the Presidential Citation for his post in the Battle of Komandorski Islands.

The "Ol' Swayback" is the only ship Karl served on during WWII.

Obituary

Karl M. Sundberg was born March 18th, 1920 in Spruce Grove Township, Beltrami County, MN., the son of Eric L. & Angeline Sundberg. He attended Spruce Grove School and graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls.

Karl entered the US Navy on August 8th, 1942 and served aboard the USS SLC as S2c until being Honorably Discharged on Nov. 10, 1945. He worked at Douglas Aircraft Co. in Long Beach, CA. before entering the military service & he also farmed with his father & brothers, and enjoyed logging and running his sawmill.

Karl was united in marriage to Mabel McLean on Nov. 25, 1967. He worked 20 years at the Grygla Co-op store as the Hardware Manager. Karl was known for being able to find just the right part for everyone.

Karl like to play horseshoes, enjoyed playing his accordion with his brothers, gardening at his log cabin, hunting deer and traveling to his ship reunions to visit his Navy buddies. He was a member of the Grygla City Council, MarBell Homes Board of Directors, Lions Club and a lifetime member of the VFW.

Karl is survived by his wife, Mabel of Grygla, MN.; five step children; 16 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren.

Karl was 84 years, 5 months & 29 days old. May his memory be blessed.
