USS SLC...Enlisted Marine...West Allan Thompson, Sgt.

July 16th, 2001

US FLAG West A. Thompson passed away on Feb. 1st, 1944
Hi Sandy,

My name is also Thompson, My uncle served aboard the SLC, from about 1940 till sometime in 1943. His name is Sgt. West Allan Thompson, and he was with the USMC detachment. He was manning an anti-aircraft gun, and was aboard during all of the battles and shellings up to and including the Battle of the Komandorski Islands.

I have long been interested in the SLC, and it's history. In Salt Lake City, where I reside, the Ft,. Douglas military museum, has on display the engineering model of the USS SLC. They asked me to do a little write up on her history for their paper and display. I was putting some things together when I happily discovered your website. I will include it in my writeup if you don't mind.

Regarding West Thompson, when he left the ship he went with the 4th Division of the USMC to the Marshall Islands and was subsiquently killed during the invasion of the Roi-Namor islands, on February 1, 1944. I know that he would be proud to have his name on the list of shipmates as I would.

Thank you for being there and doing this wonderful service.

Alan M. Thompson
