Participated in the Gilbert Islands Operation from 18 Nov., 1943 to 21
Jan., 1944, including the repelling of three (3) separate air attacks,
the strongest occurring on 20 Nov., 1943; and the bombardment, under
fire of shore batteries, of Bititu Island, Tarawa Atoll, on 19 Nov.,
1943; thereafter covering the occupation of Apamama Island and finally
remaining in the area as a unit of the defense force for the Gilbert-Ellice
Islands.
Operated with the Fast Carrier Task Force as a unit of the Third Fleet in
the Battle for the Philippines during Oct. 1944.
Mar. 8, 1844: Serving outside the Continental limits of the United States
this date.
Oct. 9, 1944: Participated in day and night bombardments of MARCUS ISLAND under heavy fire of enemy shore batteries Signed by L. W. Busbey, Jr. Captain, US NAVY, Commanding
Dec. 24, 1944: As a unit of Task Group 94.9 participated in a bombardment,
on Christmas Eve, damaging and destroying shore installations, aircraft
and medium sized enemy surface vessels located at IWO JIMA, Volcano
Islands.
Dec. 27, 1944: Participated as a unit of Task Group 94.9, in a surface
bombardment damaging and destroying installations, aircraft and medium
sized enemy surface vessels located at IWO JIMA, Volcano islands.
Feb. 16, 1945 - Mar. 12, 1945: Participated with the ship as a unit of
Task Group 54.9 in the assault and occupation of IWO JIMA during
bombardments and other actions. Authorized to wear a star in accordance
with Com5thFlt Dispatch 3000804 of 30 April, 1945 on the Asiatic-Pacific
Area Ribbon.
