USS SLC...Enlisted Navy...Warren H. Wiley, S1c

US FLAG Warren H. Wiley passed away Jan. 22nd, 1980
Feb. 29th, 2008

Warren H. Wiley enlisted in the Navy upon graduation from High School in South Beloit, Illinois in 1940. He served approximately two and a half years in the navy. By early 1942 he was in the hospital with the beginnings of the rheumatoid arthritis that would plague him for the rest of his life. He received a medical discharge late in 1942. Somewhere on your web site it shows that he was transferred to USS Solace (a hospital ship?) on February 9, 1942.

He was an all-conference football and basketball player for his high school and also was a member of the champion naval service school football team at Norfolk, Virginia in 1940. After service he worked a number of years as a rural mail carrier for the South Beloit post office and was active in local politics. He was Mayor of South Beloit for a short time, later a city councilman, then township supervisor.

Most of this comes from a newspaper article telling about the homecomings of three Wiley brothers. Clint was a bombardier in the Air Corps and Gene was a sailor aboard USS Tripoli, an escort carrier. There was a fourth brother, Dale, who was over age for service. There were also four sisters, one of them my mother Joyce. I'm old enough (born 1932) to have lived through the war, but I never was aware of just what these guys were doing. To a 9-year-old kid the war was something exciting to read about in the papers and hear about on the radio, but with no understanding of the horrors of war.

Thanks again for your efforts.
Ralph
