He contributed to the success of all forces in the Central Pacific by routing, unloading, and scheduling vital merchant shipping for the operations in the Western Caroline’s, Philippines, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. April 7th, 2008 Information added from William E. "Slug" Leary, Jr., S1c Capt. Allen was an excellent Captain who was well liked by the crew. He was a true picture of an old sea captain. I remember seeing him on the bridge at sea and he always had his binoculars hanging from his neck, smoking a pipe and his face was weather "bitten". He reminded me of a storybook skipper. He would come to the bridge, observe everything, and then very quietly be gone. Capt. Archer M. R. Allen turning command of SLC over to Capt. Ellis M.
