Allen was an excellent Captain who was well liked by the crew. He was a true picture of an old sea captain. I remember seeing him on the bridge at sea and he always had his binoculars hanging from his neck, smoking a pipe and his face was weather "bitten". He reminded me of a storybook skipper. He would come to the bridge, observe everything, and then very quietly be gone. Capt. Archer M. R.
