USS SLC...Enlisted Navy...Clay Bowling, GM3c

US FLAG Clay Bowling passed away in January 1997.
May 27th, 2001

Dear Sandy,

First of all, I would like to say how much I appreciate all the data and pictures provided in this web site on the USS Salt Lake City CA 25. My father was on the Salt Lake City on December 7, 1941, and that is the reason I was searching the internet for information. The Salt Lake City was the only ship my father was assigned to.

With all the interest with WWII and particulary the very beginning at Pearl Harbor, I decided to see what we could find. To my surprise and delight I was able to find your site and I am truly grateful, as are my mother and sister, to you for it.

He didn't have much use for, or interest in computers, but this would have thrilled him.

In searching your shipmates, I found his name, and the award of the Purple Heart. So I decided to search the picture gallery. My heart jumped when I found the group picture of the 14 gunners mates!

I believe he was a Gunners Mate, 3rd Class. So I went searching for other pictures. I can remember lots of pictures in my Dad's album of his Navy days. Moving on to the Unknown Group/Division I found him again.

Thank you so much for the USS Salt Lake City web site, and all of your fine work. I am so grateful. I just wish my dad could have been here to look through it.

Sharon (Bowling) Liebeck
