US FLAG Lowell D. Hankins passed away on Oct. 10th, 1986 at the age of 68
Sept. 13th, 2001

Dear Sandy,

I had such a wonderful surprise this summer when I went to a new market in Prescott Valley, AZ. I parked by a truck with a bumper sticker advertising the reunion of the Salt Lake City. I was so excited, but had the presence of mind to leave my name and address under the windshield wiper, and Cyrus T. Michael ball-red-02 Deceased of Mayer, AZ. left a note for me.

Mike and Mae live only about 20 miles from me, and we have yet to meet but we have spoken on the phone several times and they have been so eager to send me lots of items. We WILL get together for a lunch or coffee soon not that the summer rush is over!

I think it is so wonderful, and such a great tribute to your dad that you are gathering all this material and distributing it. I am still not in the "computer mode" but last weekend I pulled up the Salt Lake City on the computer at my son's. Of course, I cried as I read everything you had.

Lowell and I met in Iowa before he enlisted in 1939. I was a "camp follower" and went to California to work so I'd be close every time the ship got back to the US. Finally, it paid off, he was given shore duty, we were married in July, 1944. Lowell taught gunnery on Treasure Island until the end of the war. My claim to fame is that I probably wrote more letters addressed to that ship than almost anyone!

I would enjoy hearing from you (after the reunion). Thank you from me and my children for carrying out this labor of love.

Sincerely,

Dolores Hankins (Mrs. Lowell D. Hankins)

If you wish to contact Dolores, please write to Sandy for her mailing address.
