Dear Sandy,
I am Edwin E. Marttila and I was a crew member aboard the Heavy Cruiser SLC. I was from Oakland, CA. and a single 22 year old at the time I served aboard the ship.
I went to Farragot, Idaho for boot camp and later spent 16 weeks at the electrical
school. Boot camp and the school were enjoyable.
Around Jan 45 I was transported to Ulithi atoll and then to the SLC. I served 2 years and 1 month in the servive. One year and 3 months of that was on the SLC. Then, in May of 1946, I was tranfered to Shoemaker for Discharge and civilian life.
When I first boarded the SLC I was assigned to the below decks fire division and classed as a Fireman 1st class (electrician stricker) working on the boilers. I wasn't there long until I was tranfered the Electrical Div. I C section (Internal communication) and remained there until the end and became an EM3C.
The names
James Nelson Forrester, EM3c
and
Kenith E. Sellers, EM3c ring a bell.
Also the names Alden J. Nielson, EM2c,
J. J. Lohaus, EM2c,
D. Mazzoni, EM1c,
G. L. Mitchell, EM2c,
Nevin C. Masteller, EM3c,
W. D. Nelson, EM2c and there is a McBeth that is not
on the roster.
I didn't know there was an Association for the USS SLC CA25 nor the upcoming reunion in Sept in SLC, UT.
