"Holly" was a single 17 year old, attending school in Sweetwater, TX. when he entered in the service. He boarded the USS SLC in March of 1942. Commanding Officer was Ellis M. Zacharias, Sr.

He was on board the SLC during the Doolittle Raid on Japan in April of 1942 and the Battle of the Komandorski Islands in March of 1943.
