The Shore Patrol detail listed above, returned aboard, having completed the duty.

Recovered the above listed aircraft & pilots.

Received the following provisions for general mess use.
1100 lbs. Turkey, frozen; 17,136 lbs. potatoes; 4,000 lbs. apples; 4,000 lbs. oranges; 2,000 lbs. pears; 3,000 lbs. grapefruit; 1550 lbs. bananas; 2000 lbs. cabbage; 850 lbs. beans; 730 lbs. peas; 640 lbs. beetroot; 530 lbs. rhubarb; 672 lbs. pumpkin; 1260 lbs. tomatoes; 1240 lbs. celery & 1230 lbs. lettuce.
All the above inspected by Lt. T. Brown & S. J. Gallagher, Phm1c.

Steaming as before. Sighted Stephen's Light, distance 32 miles. Sighted Brother's Light, distance 22 miles. Sighted Jackson Head Light, distance 12 miles. Set conditions for Readiness III. Sighted Harori Light, distance 3.5 miles. The Captain relieved the Officer-of-the-Deck of the Conn.

Steaming as before, standing in to anchorage in Port Nickolson, New Zealand.

Anchored in Port Nickolson, New Zealand with TASK FORCE 44.

Received Captain E. Gillit, from USS JARVIS. Diagnosis: Appendicitis: Acute.

The above named men left the ship on temporary shore patrol duty.

Oil hulk HINUWAI came along side to starboard. US Barges, P27-2 & P27-1 came along side to port, with aviation gas. Commenced fueling ship.

[16-20 Hours]
Anchored as before. Commenced receiving aviation gasoline from barges.

Shore patrol returned to ship having completed temporary shore patrol duty.

Marshall, G. D., S1c returned on board after having received injuries ashore while on authorized liberty. Not a result of own misconduct. Diagnosis: Several lacerations on left forearm and another on back of left elbow. None of serious nature. Treatment: Sutured in Wellington General Hospital, examined on board ship, wounds redressed, patient put to bed.

Anchored as before. Hoisted in #1 Motor Launch & #1 Motor Whale boat. Heavy rain and wind squalls through the watch.

July 22nd, 1942

Anchored in Port Nickolson, New Zealand with TASK FORCE 44 & 62.

[4-8 Hours]
Anchored as before. Commenced making preparations for getting underway. All aircraft inspected by Cheney, R. E., Lt.(jg). All power boats inspected by Moss, A. L., MM1c. Completed all preparations for getting underway.

[8-12 Hours]
Anchored as before. 0814: Got underway in accordance with COMTASKFORCE 44, in company with TASK FORCE 62. Captain at the Conn., Exec. Officer & Navigator on the Bridge. Maneuvering incident to standing out of Port Nicholson. Set conditions of Readiness III, material conditions, modified "ZED".

July 23rd, 1942

Steaming in the company with TASK FORCE 62 in modified condition of Readiness II and modified "ZED".

[12-16 Hours]
Steaming as before. Catapulted place CS-14 to starboard, pilot, Lt. W. J. Tate, Jr.

Shifted engines to maneuvering incident to receiving mail from USS HELM.

Catapulted the following aircraft as indicated:
CS-16 to starboard, pilot, Lt. (jg) R. P. Morse ball-red-02 Deceased
CS-13 to port, pilot, Ensign J. D. Taylor
CS-15 to port, pilot, Ensign E. J. Drodz

[16-18 Hours]
Steaming as before. CS-16 sustained damage in landing, causing its motor to die. Stopped the ship & lowered No. 2 motor-whaleboat into the water to take airplane CS-16 in tow to bring it beneath the airplane crane. Recovered the above listed aircraft & crew.

[18-20 Hours]
Steaming as before incident to aircraft recovery. Hoisted in CS-16 on port side. Hoisted in #2 MWB. All engines ahead 1/3 (5kts). Commenced working speed up to 24 kts. Set Modified condition II. Sighted TASK FORCE 62, distance, 10 miles.

[20-14 Hours]
Steaming as before, taking station in cruising disposition 62-C1, position 1000 yards astern USS CHICAGO.

July 24th, 1942

Steaming, ship darkened, in Condtion of Readiness II in company with TASK FORCE 62, on station 1000 yds. astern USS CHICAGO. Fleet Guide, USS HUNTER LIGGETT

[4-8 Hours]
Steaming as before. Set special condition II. Gloomy & cloudy weather. Rain & wind, light swells from NE, ship rolling easily, wind increasing from strong breeze to gale from NE at end of watch.

[8-12 Hours]
Steaming as before. Secured from Special Condition II, set Condition III throughout the ship. Heavy weather, sea, rain, and wind decreasing at end of watch; barometer rose steadily until 1100, then began dropping; temperature gradually increasing; wind and swells coming from ENE, ship rolling much easier at end of watch than during first few hours.

[12-16 Hours]
Steaming as before. Noticed that the barometer reading had dropped .O6" during the hour 1300-1400.

July 25, 1942
[0-4 Hours]
Steaming in condition of readiness II astern approx. 15 miles of TASK FORCE 62. Acting Independently with USS JARVIS as escort vessels for USS FOMALHAUT, a straggler from formation of TASK FORCE 62. USS FOMALHAUT & USS JARVIS acting as a/s screen.

[12-14 Hours]
Steaming as before.

Morse, Russell P., Lt(jg), USNR ball-red-02 Deceased was washed overboard to starboard by a large wave while standing on the port side of the quarter deck. The wave came across the quarter deck from port to starboard. The wave carried him across the deck through two emergency life lines, through the regular life line, and over the starboard side. All engines were immediately stopped, the ship turned hard to starboard and commenced maneuvering to pick up the man. The Captain took the Conn. Smoke bomb was thrown over the side from the signal bridge to mark vicinity of man. The airplane recovery starboard was streamed to starboard to help pick up the man. Main engines shifted to H.P. Combination. Boatswain chair was rigged on airplane crane. Lt. (jg) Morse was recovered. He swam to the Boatsman's chair that was lowered to water's edge after the ship came along side, and was hoisted aboard. He was taken to sick bay for examination. The Officer-of-the-Deck relieved the Captain off the deck. During the recover, several of the ship's crew were injured while assisting in the rescue. Report made by Medical Officer after examining Lt.(jg) Morse and the following named men:
Morse, Russell P., Lt.(jg), Diag: Exposure. Retained in Sick Bay for observation. Condition: Good
Rourke, L. P., S1c, Diag: Laceration, right out eyebrow: Treated & returned to duty.
Pate, P. S1c, Diag: Contusion right arm. Retained in Sick Bay for observation. Condition: Good
Walker, A. T., S1c, Diag: Laceration of scalp, multiple contusions. Retained in Sick Bay for treatment & observation.
Robinson, H. V., S1c, Diag. Back Injury. Retained in Sick Bay for treatment & observation. Condition: Fair.
Jolley, H. B., SC3c, Diag: Laceration, 4th finger, right hand. Dressed wound and returned to duty.

Commenced maneuvering on various courses and speeds incident to regaining station in disposition. Commenced maneuvering incident to recovering airplane recover gear. Sighted life raft with supporting structure off starboard bow. It probably broke loose from one of other ships in Task Force. Observed port catapult to be in loosened condition due to damage from heavy sea. Ladder on starboard side of superstructure deck badly damaged by heavy sea.

On station in cruising deposition 1000 yds. astern USS CHICAGO.

July 26th, 2002

Steaming with TASK FORCE 62 in condition of Readiness II.

[12-16 Hours]
Steaming as before. Sighted a US TASK FORCE, distance 12.5 miles. Commenced maneuvering incident to rendezvous of US TASK FORCES & to report to TASK FORCE 11 for duty.

[16-18 Hours]
Steaming as before. Reported for duty to TASK FORCE 11. Took station in cruising disposition No. 1. USS SARATOGA, Fleet Guide, distance 2500 yards. Commenced maneuvering, conforming to movements of USS SARATOGA recovering aircraft.

Due to converging courses with another TASK FORCE; formation broke up. Commenced maneuvering incident to regaining station in disposition.

Clear weather, small rolling swells, light breeze from SW. Ship rolling easily throughout watch.

July 27th, 1942
[0-4 Hours]
Steaming with TASK FORCE 11 in cruising disposition #1.

[4-8 Hours]
Steaming as before. Received submarine contact report. Destroyer was sent to investigate, distance 6 miles. Weather calm & clear, small swells, ship rolling easily throughout watch.

[8-12 Hours]
Steaming as before. Commenced maneuvering incident to conforming to movements of USS SARATOGA. Detached from TASK FORCE 11, commenced maneuvering to joining TASK FORCE 18.

On station in TASK FORCE 18, 3000 yards from USS SAN JUAN. Sighted TASK FORCE 62, distance 16 miles. USS BUCHANAN came alongside to deliver mail. Commenced maneuvering in taking station 250 yards on USS WASP.

[12-16 Hours]
Steaming as before. Commenced maneuvering incident to receiving mail from USS STACK and conforming to movements of USS WASP in conducting air operations. Sighted Matuku Island, distance 38 miles.

[16-18 Hours]
Steaming as before. Maneuvering to conform to movements of USS WASP in recovering aircraft.

July 28th, 1942

Steaming in company with TASK FORCE 18, 2500 yards from USS WASP, Fleet Guide. Ship in condition of Readiness II.

[8-12 Hours]
Steaming as before. Sighted Island of Matuku, distance 40 miles.

July 29th, 1942

Steaming in condition of Readiness II in company with TASK FORCE 18, USS WASP Fleet Guide.

[4-8 Hours]
Steaming as before.

Catapulted the following aircraft as indicated:
CS-13 to starboard, pilot, Lt.(jg) R. P. Morse ball-red-02 Deceased
CS-14 to port, pilot, Ensign E. J. Drodz
CS-15 & CS-16 out of commission for repairs.

Sighted Kandavn? Island, distance 15 miles.

[8-12 Hours]
Steaming as before. Received USS LANG in tow, alongside to starboard for fueling. Commenced fueling USS LANG. Sent the following provisions to USS LANG:
389 lbs. frozen veal sides; 205 lbs. frozen pork loin; 165 lbs. tinned, trimmed ham; 150 doz. fresh eggs; 80 lbs. fresh cheese; 300 lbs. wheat flour; 70 lbs. powdered sugar.

Completed fueling USS LANG, having delivered 1,359 barrels fuel oil. USS LANG cast off. Commenced maneuvering to take station 2,000 yards astern of USS WASP. USS FARENHOLT reported that underwater supersonic? contact was made. Manned torpedo defense stations and set material condition "ZED". Commenced maneuvering to recover aircraft. Set condition of Readiness III. The alarm from the USS FARENHOLT having been false.

Recovered CS-13 & CS-14 "cast" method. Commenced maneuvering to go alongside USS PLATTE to fuel, starboard side to her port side.

[12-16 Hours]
Steaming as before. Completed fueling, received 220,240.4 gals. of fuel oil. Ship has now approximately filled to 99% capacity. Cast off from tanker & commenced maneuvering incident to taking station on USS WASP in cruising disposition No. 1. On station with USS WASP, distance 2500 yards. Maneuvering and conforming to movement of USS WASP launching and recovering aircraft. Partly cloudy, calm sea, light breeze & hazy horizon throughout watch. From 1300 to 1500 hours, the barometer dropped .07 fan. inch? At 1600 it began to rise slowly.

0938: Catapulted the following aircraft as indicated.
CS-13 to port, pilot, Lt. E. H. Katenkamp & radioman, St. Onge, J. W., ARM1c, to report to USS VINCENNES for temporary duty.

Recovered aircraft.
